Educator FAQ

Questions from educators

Fast answers for people exploring approval, documents, and next steps.

Do I already need to run a day home? +

No. SMADA welcomes both existing home childcare providers and serious applicants preparing to start. Existing providers may already have much of the practical foundation in place.

Can a private day home operator apply? +

Yes. If you currently operate privately and want to explore becoming an approved family day home educator under a licensed agency, you can apply and speak with SMADA about the process.

Will I lose control of my day home? +

You remain responsible for operating your home-based childcare program while working within Alberta Family Day Home Standards, SMADA policies and agency monitoring requirements.

Do I need every document before I apply? +

No. The first application is meant to understand where you are now. SMADA can then explain what documentation, screening and preparation are still required before approval.

Does SMADA guarantee children for my day home? +

No. SMADA supports family placement and educator recruitment, but enrollment depends on family demand, location, availability, licensed capacity, age mix and program fit.

Can SMADA guarantee government top-ups or grants? +

No. Eligible educators may qualify for provincial supports under current Alberta rules, but eligibility and amounts are determined by the Government of Alberta.

Do I need Level 1 ECE before I apply? +

Level 1 ECE matters for approval readiness, but you do not need every step finished before reaching out. If you are serious, we can help you understand the path and next steps.
